Europe

"Europe really does pack so much in. Leading the way in art, music and architecture."

With the flamboyance of Spain and Portugal to the efficiency of Switzerland and Germany, there is something for every teacher. Opportunities and experiences are plentiful with skiing in the Alps, relaxing in the sun along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines as well as enjoying the continental dining in exquisite cafes and restaurants.

On offer to teachers are a range of international schools. From the more 'typical' international feel of Swiss schools serving expat students to local international schools in Italy and Spain teaching the UK and IB curricula in English. Not to say that these types are exclusive in each country. The academic calendar is similar to that in the UK boasting longer summer breaks starting in June through to September which create further summer school opportunities for teachers.

The International Baccalaureate curriculum was created by teachers working in Geneva. The intention was to create an education framework for mobile students whose parents were part of the world of diplomacy, international and multi-national organisations. Since then it has spread throughout the world and remains a popular choice for international schools in Europe and is often used in conjunction with the IGCSE syllabus.

Around this continent, salaries vary from country to country and reflect the cost of living that is there. Although additional benefits of accommodation are rarely offered, the availability of cheap flights back to the UK provides an easy option of returning home. Those schools which offer the IB curriculum will provide recognised training from the IBO and for teachers travelling with dependants, free school tuition is usually on offer.
